People or experiences that led me to where I am

My parents thought I would be an artist. I began work as a graphic designer. However, I enjoyed music so much that I pursued a career in music, performing around the country and working with kids in bands. Gradually I came to realize that I wanted to work with kids, and counseling seemed a good fit.

How I got into this field

I didn’t know that I would be in education and counseling when I started out. I got into this field by looking at life as a journey; being OK with what I was doing at any given time; experimenting through new opportunities. I like to tell students, “Be what you want to be.”

What I like most about my work

I like the creativity; I like being able to utilize everything I’ve learned in the past, being able to bring it into the classroom.

Volunteer or other experiences you might check out to learn about my field

I volunteered at a middle school to learn what kids were experiencing at that age. Other volunteer opportunities: mentoring, being a camp counselor, tutoring.

Challenges and exciting changes I see in my field in the near future

We’ve gone from an approach of individual guidance counseling to a comprehensive guidance program in the classroom, working with groups.

The kinds of training and education needed to keep up in my field

Bachelor’s degree in Education, teaching certification, master’s degree, and 5 years’ teaching experience.

Other career fields where my skills could be put to use

Teaching or counseling at a community college; private counseling practice.

How my job impacts my family life

Fits well with my family life; I have summers off and vacation time with my family throughout the school year.
