When I was in high school, I got involved in a career exploration program to try and find out what kinds of jobs were out there that would really interest me. One experience I had was observing different roles and departments in a hospital for a month. I found the medical field exciting. Knowing I wanted to go to college and probably pursue something in medicine, I took college prep classes and tried my best to learn and get good grades. I knew that grades were going to be important for getting into a good college, and getting a bachelor’s degree from a good college was critical for getting into a good dental school. During dental school, you get to explore different dental specialties. I really enjoyed dentistry. Given the fact that I also love kids, it was a natural fit for me to go into pediatric dentistry.
Helping people is the thing I love the most about my job. I also like to think that I am really making a difference in the lives of my patients, helping them learn about and do the things they need to do so they’ll have a healthy smile and a working mouth all of their lives. Much of my work is preventative — providing education and doing the things required to prevent decay, disease, and injuries. But I often have to deal with accidents and emergencies, too. Another great thing about my job is I own and manage my own company. I am proud of my staff and we work together as a team to care for our patients.
Technology and innovations are really impacting dentistry. We have to be open-minded and ready to learn new ways of doing things. New tools and machines are forever on the horizon and present challenges as we have to buy them and learn how to operate and maintain them. Technology is something we all have to try and keep up with — I find it to be both a challenge and an opportunity in my field.
