Worked part time in my alma mater’s Athletic Department - Academic Success Program. Being a collegiate student-athlete.
Watching the students I work with grow and succeed: academically, athletically, and personally. Mentoring students. Finding new ways to connect my department effectively throughout the campus.
Volunteering in a local collegiate athletic department. Looking into degrees in sports management. Find ways to network and talk to intercollegiate sport administrators.
Meeting the needs of the changing student-athletes. Academic and athletic standards keep increasing, and the athletes will need more support programs to help them become successful people.
Continuing education in advising/counseling, sports management, and higher education. Understanding the needs of the changing student (athlete).
Skills obtained in this job would translate into a job in student affairs, higher education administration, counseling/advising, and/or teaching.
This job is not a 9–5 work day. Working with students, especially athletes, we have to accommodate to their schedule, which often equates to evening hours and weekends. Events that we host and/or participate in also usually happen on weekends. Like most emerging fields, you have find a balance of keeping yourself happy and healthy and succeeding in your job.
