Hospice Nurse

Organization: Arbor Hospice

Career Presentation

Career Shared: Hospice nurse

Brief Description: Hospice nursing practice provides palliative nursing care (that is, it makes the patient more comfortable but does not heal or cure) for the terminally ill and their families, with emphasis on their physical, psychosocial, emotional, and spiritual needs. In other words, these nurses help patients and families face death when it cannot be avoided. This care is provided in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team in a setting that provides 24-hour nursing availability, pain and symptom management, bereavement support, and volunteer services. The hospice nurse works primarily in the patient’s home, although hospice care can occur in nursing homes and hospitals.
