I grew up with the barbershop business in my family. Since 1939, someone in my family has worked in a barbershop. My grandpa began cutting hair in Italy, then brought his business over here. Other life experiences I’ve had: I’ve been in the army, stationed in Kentucky and then in Vietnam for a year.
It was something I chose. It has been in the family for 35 years. I remember telling my dad that I wanted to own a barbershop. He said, “What about going to the university?” I told him I tried that (I had studied electrical engineering, physics, and computer science) but this is what I want to do. I first opened a shop on East University in 1970, then moved to Liberty in 1983, and I’ve been here on State St for the past few years now. Life’s experiences lead you from one thing to another.
The people. The constant social aspect all day long. Everyone can teach you something. Several professors from U. of M. come here and I learn a lot from them, get an informal education every day, all day long. Customers come by word of mouth from other customers.
Experience is necessary; ask questions. I needed to go to one year of barber school, take an exam with the state of Michigan, and do two years of apprenticeship—you don’t need to do this now, though.
I am optimistic about coming to work everyday. I love it.
It comes from experience, from looking and listening carefully.
I have three kids, none of which are interested in this field. This makes me sad.
My barbershop is a very comfortable, inviting place, complete with an antique chair, cash register, and some mirrors. There are many pictures and news clippings pasted all over the walls—everywhere you turn, there is something interesting to look at and read. I personally know Ms. Cecilia Bartoli, an Italian opera singer. The musical society once asked me to welcome her when they brought her in to do a concert, because my family is Italian. I am now good friends with her and see her every time she comes into town. Many pictures and news articles around the shop are of her.
I have my own website: www.dascolabarbers.com.
