Taking Apart a Telephone
Did you ever wonder how your voice is sent for miles and miles over the telephone? Here's your chance to find out!
- First, look at the telephone receiver. Unscrew the heads and describe what you see.
- How do you think sound is sent over the telephone line? Is the sound converted to something else? If so, what? What is sound, really?
- Unscrew the main body of the telephone. Describe what you see inside. Do you see how the telephone rings? How does the number you dial connect you to the right phone?
- How is the phone company able to handle so many calls at the same time? Do the conversations all travel down the same wire? How can they do this without getting them all mixed up?
