Ice Cream Social
An AskERIC Lesson Plan
GRADE LEVELS: 3-7
OBJECTIVE: Students will increase their understanding of freezing
liquids while doing an early day custom.
MATERIALS: Coffee cans and smaller cans with lids, rock salt
and makings for ice cream.
ACTIVITY: Students will make ice cream, such as:

Mix:

6 eggs
-
2 1/4 cups of sugar
-
6 cups milk
-
4 cups cream
-
4 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla
-
1/2 teaspoon salt
-
1. Place mixture in a sealed can. Place this inside coffee can. Put rock
salt around the small can. Place lid on coffee can. Students roll the can
back and forth on a table until the ice cream is made.

2. Students will discuss what caused the milk to freeze.

3. They may invite others such as local old timers to share their treat.
