Program Guidelines

Mentors and coordinators will work together to accomplish the following:
bullet Monitor and test students monthly to measure progress and revise the program as needed.
bullet Measure progress to reach the success objective for each student by the date of the January district-wide reading test.
bullet Change mentors, or provide support as needed.
bullet Communicate at two-week intervals during the first three months to review progress, working relationships, and study conditions (including the learning environment, materials, interest, effort, and discipline).
bullet Schedule learning sessions to fit student and family and mentor’s time available.
bullet Schedule independent student reading time and assignments. Use student “free” time, on bus, waiting, relaxing.
bullet Collaborate with student/family on strategies: writing, reading, record-keeping.
bullet Assess as necessary to clarify problem areas.
bullet Work with parents to improve mentor and child

  Discovering the interests of students
bullet Work with teachers to
    Define problem areas
  Monitor progress
  Reinforce the work of the mentors
  Communicate parent participation
bullet Work with mentors to help them
    Discover and engage the interests of students in assignments and projects
  Learn conversational skills to impart information to students
  Monitor lessons
  Read to students with eyes and hands on
  Encourage comprehension skills
bullet Define specific reading problems:
    Words
  Letters
  Punctuation
  Comprehension/meaning
  Materials needed
