Notes for Parents |
|---|
Your participation in your child’s reading is a priceless contribution. Your example, interest, enthusiasm, help, and discipline can virtually guarantee reading success and enjoyment for your child. The Serendipity Reading System provides a wide variety of materials and resources. Maps. books, dictionaries, and newspapers give everyday meaning to the value of reading. Resources including libraries, community centers, and volunteers support the learning process of the schools. Family participation by parents, brothers, and sisters can be extremely important. When all of these resources work together, progress is rapid and success is almost certain. We can all help, but the ultimate responsibility belongs to the child, and most of the “work” of learning must be done by the child. It is important for all of us to remember that learning should be fun. Intellectual curiosity is a survival instinct that enables us to compete and thrive. We should be careful to avoid destroying this innate love of learning by making it too difficult or boring. |
The Value of Reading |
|---|
| The lifelong value of the ability to read with excellent comprehension could be estimated at one million dollars. This is based on a difference in income of $25,000 per year, or $12.00 per hour, over a career of forty years: |
| $25,000 x 40 years = $1,000,000 |
Business success, promotions, higher education, and sound investments almost always depend on the ability to read and understand. If you can’t read well, there are many things you can’t do well. |
Secrets of Reading Success |
The secret of becoming a good reader is to enjoy reading. Children who enjoy it tend to read a lot—and to become more skilled every month. The Serendipity Reading Club puts enjoyment first and backs it up with books, materials, and tutoring needed to become an excellent reader. |
